Expanding Medicaid: Less costly covering more low-income uninsured than expanding private insurance PDF Print E-mail

Average medical expenditures per person are lower under public programs such as Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) than under private insurance, according to new research published by Health Affairs. The new research, by Leighton Ku of George Washington University and Matthew Broaddus of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, is consistent with previous work by researchers at the Urban Institute, according to the Center on budget and Policy Priorities.

Bush Administration Medicaid regulations could hurt state PDF Print E-mail
The Bush Administration has proposed sweeping new Medicaid regulations that will shift costs for this federal state program on to Michigan.  The proposed regulations will cost the Michigan Medicaid program $3.9 billion. A cut of this magnitude would severely cripple Medicaid and would balloon a budget deficit already predicted to be $472 million.

Health Systems, Health Authority Announce Safety Net Initiatives

DETROIT -- The leaders of health systems serving Wayne County have agreed to pursue initiatives that will help contain uncompensated care which has been an increasing fiscal burden and create systems that will more appropriately and cost-effectively meet the health and social needs of uninsured and underinsured people.
